“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”

Letter To A Friend In Despair
There seems to be very little one can do to lift somebody else from the darkness of their own mind; we may do our best to uplift, affirm, and motivate our loved ones, but the desire to journey oneself out of depression must come from within.
Earlier this year, my parents’ close friend fell into a deep depression, one of many in his lifetime. Growing up, this man was a constant influence in my life and, being gay himself, was also one of my first role models. Upon hearing news of his fall into despair, I felt his pain as if it were my own. Anais Nin wrote, “You cannot save people. You can only love them.” I wrote my friend the following letter with an understanding that although he must walk himself out of the dark woods, I might help light the way.
I share this private correspondence with those of you who are depressed or know somebody who is, that it might bring the comfort of hope.
